My son wears his watch every day but just 2 months after getting for Christmas, the band has ripped completely. This Nixon watch is a pretty full featured device squarely targeted to surfers. I actually got it hoping to use it for saltwater fishing because it has tide and sunrise/sunset data, but having gotten more familiar with it I realize just how surfer-centric it is. The main thing to know is that the built-in database only covers beaches reasonably associated with surfing. I need tide data for a part of the Florida panhandle Gulf Coast that simply is not available on this watch. There is an option to manually enter upcoming tide data for unlisted areas so that the watch can predict future tide events, but the information just isn't accurate enough to help for fishing where you need absolute accuracy. So, know in advance that this watch is great for Waikiki, for example, but not for Apalachee Bay.Technical commentary aside, I like the watch. I'm a guy and still find the watch big enough that it doesn't look undersized on my wrist. The screen is easy to read in broad daylight, though some of the indicators are quite small for my middle-aged eyes. The "am/pm" text, for example, is quite tiny. Navigating the functions of the watch is straightforward and easy. In addition to sunrise and Tide information, you get a timer, chronograph, alarm, and time info along with a backlight button for dark conditions. The watch is obviously waterproof and suitable for saltwater use, making it a good choice for outdoor water activities. The watch band is comfortable, and thankfully it is not uniquely shaped - so it would be very easy to replace if desired or necessary.Overall this is a fine watch for water use that will serve anywhere well but is especially useful for surfers.I work in a kitchen, so my hands are constantly exposed to heat and moisture. I've destroyed some other digital watches this way so I was on the hunt for one that was designed to weather the elements - I've been wearing this one for 6 months now and it's held up amazingly well. It braves salt water and sun just as well as soapy water and heat in the kitchen, and mine doesn't have a scratch on it yet. It's easy to read and use, the buttons are large and easy to press to cycle through modes or set timers. The wristband is smooth and comfortable and the watch itself is lightweight but feels well-made. The band is adjustable and fits my small wrists well on the second smallest setting with lots of room to spare on the larger ones. Even though I didn't buy it for all the surf-specific features, it's neat to be able to track the tides from my wrist without even pressing a button! I live in Hawaii and have lots of friends who surf or sail, so this is still useful info sometimes, and I was able to select the tides for my region from a list automatically included in the watch settings. My only complaint is very minor - the display isn't the brightest and the backlight isn't either, but since I'm primarily using it in a well-lit kitchen that's not a huge issue for me. Overall this watch does everything I need it to and looks good doing it - I'd buy the same one in a heartbeat! I also love that it's made from reclaimed plastic to help clean up the oceans I swim in, rather than putting more plastic into landfills.Strap broke 3 months in. Can’t wear anymoreI gave my Apple watch to my son and afterwards realized how much I relied on it to give me updates of the tides for my surf sessions. I can obviously find the surf on my iphone apps so there was no way for me to justify buying a watch that had the tide information on it. Nixon has been out for quite a while and tides are always prominently featured on the watch since they are a surf company but again, I could never justify buying a "surf watch." To my joy and surprise this watch came up on Amazon Vine and I snapped it up right away. The listed value was about $90 for the grey one that I got, but $130 for the other colors. I"m not complaining. Although this item was free, I always give honest reviews. Here's the good: 1) Very light. You can hardly tell you even have a watch on. 2) The bands can be replaced by 3rd party watch bands for as low as $12. 3) Tide graph is large enough to see. 3) Button "C" can be pressed to show the next high tide time/height. Button "D" does the same for low tide. Here's the bad: 1) The display is pretty bad. It's an LCD display and it reminds me of the old Radio Shack calculators where it's a black screen with blocky white numbering. The problem is that the display is so dark it is very very difficult to read. At night it's difficult because of the dim environment. During the day it's difficult to read because the display can't overcome the glare of the sun. There's a backlight but even that is so dim that it only helps a little bit. 2) The AM/PM is soooooo small that it's almost impossible to read. There's also DST (Daylight Savings Time) indicator that, again, is so small, you almost need a magnifying glass to read it. No joke. Having said that, no one's really going to need to know that it's am/pm or dst, but then, just get rid of it instead of making the screen look like there's a smudge on it. 3) The crystal face must be made of some plastic because within the first week of having it on there's already a visible scratch on it.Overall, I don't think I'd spend $90 on this watch if I had to actually purchase it. There are better alternatives from Casio's G-Shock line that does the same and comes with better features. I think this is the lower end line of the Nixon watches and unfortunately I'm a bit underwhelmed. I'd give this item a 2.5 but there were no half stars so I rounded up.
